Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee

Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee has been my favourite for weekend breakfasts for quite some time. They have several outlets around Singapore but the one I frequent is the stall at Jurong Gateway which is a short walk from Jurong East MRT Station.

The queue was short when I visited the stall on a Sunday morning around 11am. The wanton mee comes in various sizes ranging from S$4-6 with S$4 being the regular size and S$6 the jumbo version. The one I ordered here is the jumbo size. The mee came with a bowl of soup, which had a couple of dumplings in it. In the bowl of mee were char siew, pork sausages, fried dumplings and some green vegetables. There were red chilli flakes and sliced green chilli available to go along with the mee. The mee also came with a generous serving of fried pork lard.

Unlike the local style wanton mee, the mee over here did not have any sauce. It seemed to be tossed in some seasoned oil prior to serving. The mee was springy and very flavourful despite its bland appearance. The char siew was substantial and had this sweet smokey flavour. The fried dumplings gave a satisfying crunch with its crispy outer skin. The minced meat within was moist and had a peppery taste. The soup dumpling tasted the same as their fried counterparts. The pork sausages were my favourite with their rich sweet savoury flavour. I could taste the oil oozing out from the sausage with every bite. Sinful but yet so delicious. The red chilli flakes were very spicy so try a little first before adding a spoonful.

The highlights for me were the pork sausages and the mee. Though it may seem pricey when compared to local wanton mee that goes for S$3-4, the taste and the ingredients make it worth it.
