Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Noodle Rice 香港玫瑰油鸡面饭

Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Noodle Rice is located at Beauty World Food Centre which is on the top floor of Beauty World Centre. The stall serves a wide variety of dishes ranging from beef brisket noodles to char siew (Cantonese barbeque pork) rice.

The stall is famously known for their Cantonese braised soya sauce chicken which comes in rice or noodles. Their dumplings are one of their crowd favorites as well.

I visited the stall on Sunday around noon and as expected, there was already a queue at the stall front. There was around 8 customers ahead of me when I joined the queue and the wait was approximately 25 minutes.

I ordered the soya sauce chicken with rice (S$3.00) and noodles (S$3.30). The rice option came with sliced cucumbers on the side while the noodles had couple stalks of green vegetables. Both options came with a bowl of soup. The soya sauce gravy was drizzled over both dishes prior to serving. Garlic chilli and sliced green chilli were available self-service at the stall front.

The chicken was soft and fairly tender with a subtle soya sauce flavour. The gravy was light and does not have a thick consistency. While fragrant, the flavour of the gravy was not very strong and might not appeal patrons who prefer a richer taste. The rice was not very oily and had a hint of garlic ginger savoriness. However, I found it to be a tad hard.

Patrons who cannot handle spiciness should avoid the garlic chilli which I found to be surprisingly spicy. When mixed in with the rice, you can really feel in the heat in your mouth. Best to have a drink ready if you decide to give it a go.

On the other hand, the chilli in the noodles was much milder in comparison. The thin strands of yellow noodles felt very light in the mouth and had a very subtle “gee” or alkaline taste. The noodles dried up rather quickly so remember to eat it soon. The soup served for both dishes was very flavoursome with a distinctive dried cuttlefish taste.

Overall I would have preferred a richer flavour in the soya sauce gravy. I will try out the other dishes especially the dumplings for the next visit.
